Lofty Music

Wed, 07.10.2009
Sounds of music in high places sums up my magical moments of delight.

Walking around Gloucester Cathedral one afternoon the choir began their practice with a burst of sound as they ran up scales, seeming to lift the very roof way above their heads, their voices truly uplifting to all who listened.

On another occasion, visiting the Dan-yr-Ogof caves in South Wales a male voice choir performed their repertoire of hymns, classical and folk music within the Cathedral Cavern, the weather not being conducive to their planned outdoor renditions. Their rich voices resounding from the walls, it was if a thousand voices harmonised.

In contrast a single harpist provided my final memorable moment. Dressed as a medieval travelling minstrel he played his small harp in the ruins of Harlech Castle. He, too, had the power to bounce the sound off the walls and the haunting melodies clutched at the heart strings as no electronic music could ever hope to achieve. All of them offering music in high places to lift the soul.
