My Hamster

I have a Chinese dwarf hamster, about the size of my thumb, and when I take her out of her cage she clings to my hand, acclimatizing herself to the change in scenery. She is this beautiful little warm bundle in my palm, very light and fragile and softly furry, holding on to me with pink little claws that look remarkably like fingers.

While I wait, patiently, she pulls herself together and begins carefully washing her face, smoothing her whiskers, and all the time makes a soft little chittering noise. This done, she immediately takes off, running at a fast waddle, to see what treat I have brought her.

It's a near fatal dose of cute, but by slow degrees I am becoming increasingly acclimatised...
